Prof. Alfredo Bermúdez de Castro

Alfredo Bermúdez de Castro (A Coruña, Spain, 1950) is a Professor of Applied Mathematics at the University of Santiago de Compostela (USC) and coordinator of the Research Group in Mathematical Engineering (mat+i) since 1986.

Educated by the French school and inspired by his mentor, Professor Jacques-Louis Lions, Alfredo Bermúdez is a key figure in the development of Applied Mathematics in Spain for the past 40 years. His most internationally recognized achievements are related to the field of computational methods and their application to solve real industrial problems. His activity in this area has led to a continuous flow of innovative and diverse projects with the industrial sector in Spain and abroad, in fields as diverse as fluid and solid mechanics, combustion, electromagnetism, acoustics, metallurgy, environment, chemical kinetics, finance, noise control theory and optimization. Moreover, he has promoted the development of several free software packages such as MaxFEM, PAMM, AcousFEM and others so medium and small industries can access to free simulation software.

He has more than 150 ISI publications in the fields of modelling, mathematical and numerical analysis of partial differential equations. His contributions to the numerical solution of variational inequalities and the development of numerical methods for balance laws with source terms are widely known, as well as, his use of Lagrange multipliers to impose realistic boundary conditions, new models of combustion for pulverized coal particles, new pure Lagrangian methods to solve continuum mechanics problems, for instance. He has directed or co-directed 27 PhD theses and is currently supervising 4 more.

He was the founding member and former Vice President of the Spanish Society of Applied Mathematics (SEMA). He was also one of the founding members of the Technological Institute for Industrial Mathematics (ITMATI). At present, he is a member of the Spanish Royal Academy of Sciences, co-chairman of the Scientific Committee at the Basque Center of Applied Mathematics (BCAM) and Honorary member of the European Consortium for Mathematics in Industry (ECMI).
